First-year coach Ron Durant has three returning starters from a team that finished last year’s season strong before falling short of a state tournament berth. Senior guard Makai Barr (6-3) has height and can be a major factor on the glass. Fellow senior guard Nahiku Nahale-a (5-8) is a legitimate 3-point threat with extended range, and also is a reliable ball-handler who can penetrate and distribute. He had a 19-point game with four assists and two steals in this season’s victory over Kailua.
Junior guard Shyne Salvador (6-4) has emerged as a scoring threat who can step out and hit the 3-pointer. Senior guard Xander Aquino (6-1) is yet another three-year veteran like Barr, Nahale-a and Salvador. Returning junior Malakai Lee, a 6-8 center, is one of the nation’s top college football prospects and presents a big physical presence in the post.
